Pastor Kristen Koch will be returning to preach. She was our Associate Pastor 2009-2012. She is also a beloved daughter of our congregation and is a graduate of Atonement Lutheran School. Since serving at Atonement, she has been the pastor at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and most recently has served both Shepherd of the Hill and Unity. Beginning December 15, she is serving in a new role as Director of Evangelical Mission as part of the Central States Synod staff.

The achievements of humans being launched into space, orbiting Earth, performing spacewalks, and walking on the Moon extended exploration, the Sixties are known as the "countercultural decade" in the United States and other Western countries. There was a revolution in social norms, including religion, morality, law and order, clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, civil rights, precepts of military duty, and schooling. A wide range of music emerged, from popular music inspired by and including the Beatles (in the United States known as the British Invasion) to the folk music revival, including the poetic lyrics of Bob Dylan. In the United States the Sixties were also called the "cultural decade" while in the United Kingdom (especially London) it was called the Swinging Sixties.

Pastor Dan Johnson

I am delighted to return to The Lutheran Church of the Atonement. My experiences here have profoundly shaped me both as a pastor and as an individual. The community holds a special place in my heart, and I often find myself reflecting on the connections and memories we share. I pray for Atonement regularly and cherish the bonds formed during my time with you.

In 2019, Atonement provided the opportunity for us to bring ten middle school students and three adults to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Witnessing the students’ enthusiasm and growth inspired me to accept the invitation to lead the center. Pine Ridge is a place that transforms hearts, and encourage everyone to consider visiting. Our center has welcomed groups from around the world, offering unique experiences and fostering meaningful change.

Since July 2020, I have been serving in Pine Ridge, embracing the diverse aspects of this calling.  The role is both challenging and rewarding—sometimes within the same day. Around town, I am known as Pastor Dan, and I have enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life.

The center is a vibrant hub of activity, making a difference every day. This winter, we have assisted over 300 households and more than 1,350 individuals in staying warm. Our outreach includes distributing over 600 hygiene kits, 300 blankets, and countless diapers. Each week, we engage with 40 children, providing snacks and activities to support their well-being.

We collaborate with other organizations to address homelessness in Pine Ridge. While our partners operate the night shelter, we offer the center as a day shelter. Every day, more than 80 people find warmth, safety, cleanliness, and nourishment at our facility.

If you are seeking a place where you can make a tangible difference and witness transformation, I warmly invite you to visit the center. Whether you come as an individual or with a group, your presence and support are invaluable.

I will always treasure my time with you at Atonement.

Blessings to you n all that you do.

Warm regards,

Pastor (Vicar) Dan
